A Laser Approach to Treating Gum Disease
LANAP® treats the infection inside the gum pocket while aiming to keep your own gum tissue.
Treats infected gum pockets
The laser targets diseased tissue and bacteria below the gumline.
Gentler on your gums
Typically no scalpel or sutures, and healthy tissue is preserved where possible.
Supports natural healing
Designed to help gums reattach and bone regenerate where clinically possible.
Could LANAP Be Right for You?
Gum disease often progresses quietly. Any of these signs is a good reason for a periodontal evaluation.
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Deep periodontal pockets
- A diagnosis of periodontitis
- Gums pulling back from teeth
- Bone loss seen on X-rays
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Persistent bad breath
- Gum disease that returned after treatment
LANAP® may be an option for some patients with moderate to severe gum disease. An evaluation — exam, pocket measurements and imaging — shows whether it suits you. If another treatment fits better, Dr. Eldomiaty will explain why.
Schedule a Periodontal EvaluationWhat Is LANAP® Laser Gum Surgery?
LANAP stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure — a step-by-step protocol for treating gum disease with one specific dental laser, the PerioLase® MVP-7.
Gum disease is a bacterial infection below the gumline. As it advances, the gum separates from the tooth and forms a periodontal pocket that a toothbrush can’t reach. Left untreated, the infection can break down the bone that holds the tooth.
What the laser treatment does
- Targets the diseased tissue lining the pocket while aiming to preserve healthy gum
- Reduces the bacteria inside the pocket
- Works with careful root cleaning to remove tartar
- Helps form a stable clot that seals the pocket while it heals
LANAP is one part of our periodontal care in Beaverton, alongside deep cleanings, gum grafting and periodontal maintenance.

LANAP® Treatment Steps
Eight stages, from measuring the pocket to long-term healing.
-

Step 1: Pocket depth measured
The depth of each gum pocket is measured to show where the disease is.
-

Step 2: Diseased tissue targeted
The laser targets bacteria and diseased tissue in the pocket lining.
-

Step 3: Root surface cleaned
Ultrasonic instruments remove tartar and deposits from the root surface.
-

Step 4: Bone modified
The bone surface at the base of the pocket is prepared to encourage healing.
-

Step 5: Pocket sealed for healing
A second laser pass helps form a stable clot that seals the pocket.
-

Step 6: Healing begins
The gum begins to heal against the clean root surface.
-

Step 7: Bite adjusted
If uneven biting forces are stressing the tooth, the bite may be adjusted.
-

Step 8: Healing & regeneration
Bone healing continues over months, supporting regeneration of attachment where possible.

How LANAP® Treatment Works
Eight careful steps, from your first evaluation to long-term follow-up.
-
Periodontal evaluation
An exam, a review of your medical history and a conversation about your concerns and goals.
-
Imaging & pocket measurements
X-rays or 3D CBCT imaging and careful pocket measurements show where the disease is and how much bone is affected.
-
First laser pass
With the area numb, the laser targets bacteria and diseased tissue in the pocket lining.
-
Root surface cleaning
Ultrasonic instruments remove tartar and deposits from the root surface.
-
Treating the pocket
The bone surface at the base of the pocket is prepared to encourage healing.
-
Second laser pass & seal
A different laser setting helps form a stable clot that seals the pocket and protects healing.
-
Bite adjustment when indicated
If heavy or uneven biting forces are stressing affected teeth, the bite may be adjusted.
-
Healing & follow-up
The gum heals against the clean root over the following weeks; bone healing continues over months, supported by regular maintenance.

What to Expect Before, During and After LANAP
-
Before
Evaluation & plan
Exam, imaging and a clear plan — with time for your questions.
More about before
Bring a list of your medications and health conditions — for example blood thinners, diabetes, heart conditions or pregnancy. Discuss them with Dr. Eldomiaty and your physician, and don’t stop or change any medication on your own.
-
During
Numb & comfortable
Local anesthesia, often in two visits — one side of the mouth at a time.
More about during
Each visit takes around two hours. For anxious patients, we offer certified IV sedation and oral sedation.
-
After
Healing & follow-up
Some soreness for a few days, soft foods, then regular check-ups.
More about after
You’ll leave the treated gums alone for a period your periodontist specifies. Follow-up visits check your healing and your bite, and regular periodontal maintenance — often every three months at first — helps keep gum disease under control while bone healing continues over months.
Recovery varies by patient and the extent of treatment. Your periodontist will provide specific post-operative instructions.
LANAP® Compared with Traditional Gum Surgery
Traditional pocket-reduction (osseous) surgery is an established, effective treatment. LANAP takes a different approach.
| Topic | Traditional gum surgery | LANAP® protocol |
|---|---|---|
| Access to the roots | The gum is opened with a scalpel and folded back. | The laser works inside the pocket; the gum is typically not cut. |
| Sutures | Stitches are usually placed. | Typically no sutures. |
| Gum tissue | Tissue may be trimmed, which can leave the gumline lower. | Aims to preserve gum tissue; less recession reported. |
| Recovery | Soreness and swelling for several days to a couple of weeks. | Many patients report milder soreness for a few days. |
| Regeneration | Mainly reduces pocket depth; grafting may be added. | Designed to support regeneration of attachment and bone where possible. |
| Planning | Usually area by area over several appointments. | Often two longer visits, one side at a time. |
Comparisons are general. Comfort, recovery and results vary, and LANAP is not right for everyone. Your periodontist will explain which approach fits your case.
LANAP Questions, Answered
What is LANAP laser gum surgery?
LANAP stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure. It is a step-by-step protocol for treating gum disease that uses the PerioLase MVP-7 laser to remove diseased tissue and bacteria from periodontal pockets, together with careful cleaning of the root surfaces. It is designed to help the gum heal back against the tooth and to support regeneration of the tissues that hold the tooth in place.
Is LANAP right for everyone with gum disease?
No. LANAP may be an option for some patients with moderate to severe periodontal disease. Whether it suits you depends on your pocket depths, bone levels, medical history and other factors. A periodontal evaluation is needed first, and Dr. Eldomiaty will explain every option, including treatments other than LANAP.
How does LANAP compare with traditional gum surgery?
Traditional pocket-reduction surgery opens the gum with a scalpel, reshapes tissue and closes it with sutures. With LANAP the laser works inside the pocket, so the gum is typically not cut or stitched. Compared with traditional approaches, LANAP aims to preserve more gum tissue and is often associated with less post-operative discomfort. Both are established treatments; the right choice depends on your case.
Does LANAP require a scalpel or sutures?
In most LANAP cases no scalpel incisions or sutures are needed, because the laser treats the pocket from within. Your periodontist will tell you in advance if anything different is planned for your treatment.
How long does LANAP treatment take?
Treatment is often completed in two visits, each treating one side of the mouth and lasting roughly two hours, usually about a week apart. The exact plan depends on how many teeth are affected and is confirmed at your consultation.
What is recovery like after LANAP?
Some aching, soreness or sensitivity for a few days is common. You will follow a soft diet for a period and avoid brushing or flossing the treated gums until your periodontist says so. Recovery varies by patient and the extent of treatment, and you will receive specific post-operative instructions.
Can LANAP help with bone loss from gum disease?
It can for some patients. The PerioLase MVP-7 has FDA 510(k) clearance for periodontal regeneration, meaning new attachment tissue and bone around the tooth root, when used in the LANAP protocol. Bone healing is gradual over many months, and how much occurs varies from person to person. Smoking, general health and home care all affect healing, and no result can be guaranteed.
Who performs LANAP at Aloha Dental Specialty Center?
