Before Your Procedure

Pre-operative instructions include:
- Don’t eat or drink for 6-8 hours before (if receiving sedation)
- Arrange for someone to drive you home
- Wear comfortable clothing
- Inform us of all medications you take
During the Procedure
Wisdom teeth removal typically takes 30-60 minutes. You’ll receive local anesthesia plus sedation options (nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation) to ensure comfort. Most patients feel nothing during the procedure.
The surgeon will:
- Numb the area completely
- Make a small incision in the gum if the tooth is impacted
- Remove any bone covering the tooth
- Section the tooth if needed for easier removal
- Clean the socket and place stitches
Recovery Timeline
- Day 1-2: Swelling peaks. Apply ice packs. Rest. Eat soft foods (yogurt, applesauce, smoothies).
- Day 3-5: Swelling begins to decrease. Gradually introduce semi-soft foods. Continue salt water rinses.
- Day 7-10: Most patients feel significantly better. Stitches dissolve. Return to normal diet as comfort allows.
- 2 weeks: Full recovery for most patients. Follow-up visit to check healing.
Tips for a Smooth Recovery
- Apply ice packs: 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off
- Take prescribed pain medication as directed
- Don’t use straws (suction can dislodge the blood clot)
- Don’t smoke for at least 72 hours (ideally 1-2 weeks)
- Rinse gently with warm salt water starting the day after surgery
- Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights
