Here are the 5 critical warning signs that you need immediate dental attention:

1. Severe, Unrelenting Tooth Pain

Mild toothache that comes and goes might wait for a regular appointment. But intense, throbbing pain that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter painkillers signals a serious infection or nerve involvement. This kind of pain often indicates an abscess — a dangerous infection that can spread to your jaw, neck, or even your brain if untreated.

What to do: Call us immediately at (503) 822-0096. Take ibuprofen (Advil) for pain and inflammation while you wait for your appointment. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum.

2. Facial Swelling

Swelling in your face, jaw, or neck that accompanies dental pain is a red flag for infection. The swelling may firm, warm to the touch, and progressively worsening. This is especially dangerous if the swelling affects your ability to breathe or swallow.

What to do: If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, go to the emergency room immediately. Otherwise, call our office for a same-day evaluation.

3. A Knocked-Out or Broken Tooth

What to do: Handle a knocked-out tooth by the crown only (never the root). Gently rinse it and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, keep it moist in milk or saliva. Call us immediately.

Bleeding gums after brushing is common and usually not an emergency. But heavy, persistent bleeding after an extraction, trauma, or from the gums without obvious cause requires professional evaluation — especially if you take blood thinners.

What to do: Apply firm pressure with gauze or a clean cloth for 15-20 minutes. If bleeding doesn’t slow, call our office or visit the ER.

Pus draining from around a tooth or from the gum is a definitive sign of infection (abscess). You may also notice a persistent foul taste in your mouth. Left untreated, dental abscesses can become life-threatening.
