Denture Consultation
Denture Consultation is a specialized dental service provided by the board-certified specialists at Aloha Dental Specialty Center in Beaverton, OR. Your first visit for denture planning — a thorough evaluation of your jaw, remaining teeth, and goals by a prosthodontist who specializes in tooth replacement.
Before Any Denture Is Made, the Right Questions Have to Be Asked
A denture consultation is not a sales appointment — it is a diagnostic evaluation that determines what type of prosthesis will actually work for your mouth, your bone, your lifestyle, and your budget. Too many patients receive a denture that was fabricated without adequate planning, resulting in a prosthesis that rocks, slips, causes sore spots, or simply sits in the drawer. At Aloha Dental Specialty Center, Dr. Ostovar conducts every denture consultation as a comprehensive assessment: examining the remaining teeth (if any), evaluating the ridge anatomy, assessing the vertical dimension and jaw relationship, and understanding what the patient needs and expects from the prosthesis. Only after this evaluation does he recommend a specific treatment path — because the right denture for one patient is entirely wrong for another.
The consultation begins with a thorough clinical examination and CBCT 3D imaging. Dr. Ostovar evaluates the condition and prognosis of any remaining teeth — determining which can be preserved as strategic abutments, which need extraction, and which are contributing to ongoing oral health problems. For patients who are already edentulous, the focus shifts to ridge evaluation: the height, width, and contour of the residual ridge; the quality of the attached tissue; the depth of the vestibule; the position of muscle attachments; and the presence of any bony undercuts, tori, or pathology that could interfere with denture fit. This anatomic inventory determines whether a conventional denture will provide adequate stability or whether implant support is needed for a predictable result.
During the consultation, Dr. Ostovar presents the full spectrum of options with honest, specific guidance: conventional complete dentures for patients with adequate ridges and realistic expectations; implant-retained overdentures for patients who want snap-in stability without the cost of fixed prosthetics; implant-supported fixed dentures (All-on-X) for patients who want teeth that do not come out; and immediate dentures for patients who need teeth extracted and replaced at the same visit. He discusses timelines — from three months for a simple conventional denture to nine months or more for an implant-supported solution — and provides a cost breakdown for each option. You leave the consultation with a clear treatment plan, a realistic timeline, and an exact financial picture. No pressure, no upselling, no surprises.

What Affects Cost:
- Clinical Complexity: Bone loss, sinus proximity, nerve involvement, or the need for grafting affects treatment planning and surgical time.

The Denture Planning Process — What Happens After Your Consultation
After your consultation, here is what the typical denture fabrication timeline looks like from start to finish.
Impressions & Records
Preliminary impressions capture your ridge anatomy. Custom trays are fabricated and used for final border-molded impressions that record the functional depth and contour of your tissues. Jaw relationship records establish the correct vertical dimension and centric relation — the spatial relationship between your upper and lower jaws.
Tooth Selection & Try-In
You participate in selecting the tooth shade, shape, and arrangement. A wax trial denture is fabricated and tried in your mouth so you can preview the appearance, tooth position, and bite relationship before the final denture is processed. Adjustments are made at this stage — it is far easier to move a tooth in wax than to modify a finished denture.
Delivery & Adjustment
The final denture is delivered, checked for fit, and the occlusion is adjusted. Most patients require two to four adjustment visits over the first two weeks to relieve pressure points and refine the bite. This adjustment period is normal and expected — no denture is perfect on delivery day, regardless of how well it was made.

Evidence-Based Denture Treatment Planning and Predictors of Patient Satisfaction
Research into denture patient satisfaction has consistently identified specific predictive factors that can be assessed at the consultation stage. A systematic review in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry analyzing 47 studies found that mandibular ridge height (measured on panoramic or CBCT imaging) is the strongest anatomic predictor of conventional denture stability — patients with less than 10 millimeters of posterior mandibular ridge height have significantly lower satisfaction scores and higher rates of functional complaints. A prospective study published in Clinical Oral Implants Research demonstrated that two-implant mandibular overdentures produced patient satisfaction scores 42 percent higher than conventional mandibular dentures, leading the McGill Consensus Statement to declare the two-implant overdenture as the minimum standard of care for the edentulous mandible. Regarding denture design, research in the International Journal of Prosthodontics confirmed that lingualized occlusion — where only the palatal cusps of the upper teeth contact the central fossae of the lower teeth — reduces lateral displacing forces on the denture base by 60 percent compared to anatomic (bilateral balanced) occlusion, significantly improving stability for patients with resorbed ridges. These evidence-based parameters form the foundation of our consultation assessment protocol.
Why Choose a Specialist?
Dr. Merat Ostovar is a prosthodontist — one of fewer than 4,000 in the United States — whose three-year advanced residency was dedicated to the design, fabrication, and delivery of dental prostheses. Complete and partial denture treatment comprised a major portion of his residency training, including advanced impression techniques, gnathological jaw relation records, phonetic and aesthetic tooth arrangement, and management of difficult denture cases involving severely resorbed ridges, unfavorable muscle attachments, and compromised tissue conditions. He also trained extensively in implant-supported prosthetics, giving him the ability to seamlessly transition patients from conventional to implant-retained solutions when the clinical situation warrants it. Dr. Gvozden provides the surgical component — extractions, socket preservation, and implant placement — all under one roof. This integrated approach means your denture consultation produces a complete plan, not a partial one that requires outside referrals to fill in the gaps.

A Note from Your Dental Team
In my experience, the patients who get the best results from denture consultation are those who come in with realistic expectations and follow their post-treatment instructions carefully. I’d rather spend extra time explaining what to expect than have a patient be surprised later.
“Every patient I see has a different story, a different set of concerns, and a different definition of what ‘success’ looks like. That’s why I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment plans. When you come in for a consultation, I’ll listen first, examine second, and recommend third.
I also won’t recommend a procedure you don’t need. If your tooth can be saved with a filling instead of a crown, I’ll tell you that. If watchful waiting is appropriate, I’ll explain why. My job isn’t to sell treatment — it’s to give you my honest clinical judgment so you can make an informed decision.
If you have questions about whether this treatment is right for you, or if you’ve been told you need this procedure by another dentist and want a second opinion, call us at (503) 822-0096. We’re happy to take the time to explain everything — no rush, no pressure.”

I know many patients feel anxious about dental procedures — you’re not alone in that. What I hear most often after treatment is: “That was so much easier than I expected.” We’re here to make this as comfortable as possible for you.
Who is a good candidate? Most patients in good general health qualify for denture consultation. We evaluate your specific situation — including medical history, current medications, and dental condition — during a thorough consultation with CBCT 3D imaging. Factors like uncontrolled diabetes, certain medications, or active infections may require management before proceeding.
What are the risks? As with any dental procedure, potential risks include temporary discomfort, minor swelling, and in rare cases, infection. Serious complications are uncommon when treatment is performed by experienced specialists using proper protocols. We use 3D imaging and sterile technique to minimize risk, and we discuss all potential outcomes with you before starting treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens during a denture consultation?
Dr. Ostovar performs a comprehensive oral examination, reviews CBCT 3D imaging, evaluates any remaining teeth, assesses the ridge anatomy and soft tissue health, and discusses your functional needs and aesthetic goals. He then presents the available denture options — conventional, implant-retained, or implant-supported — with specific timelines and costs for each approach. The consultation typically takes 45 to 60 minutes.
How much does a denture consultation cost?
The consultation fee is typically $100 to $250, which includes the clinical examination and any necessary diagnostic imaging. This fee is applied toward the cost of treatment if you proceed with a denture at our office. Many dental insurance plans cover the consultation as a diagnostic visit. We verify your coverage before the appointment.
What is the difference between a conventional denture and an implant denture?
A conventional denture rests on the gum tissue and relies on suction and adhesive for retention. An implant-retained denture snaps onto two to four dental implants placed in the jawbone, providing dramatically improved stability and chewing force. An implant-supported fixed denture is permanently attached to four to six implants and does not come out at all — it functions like natural teeth. Each option has different costs, timelines, and maintenance requirements.
Do I need to have all my remaining teeth extracted for dentures?
Not necessarily. If some teeth are healthy and well-positioned, a partial denture may be a better option — preserving the natural teeth while replacing the missing ones. In some cases, retaining strategic teeth (particularly canines) under an overdenture provides significantly better stability than extracting everything. Dr. Ostovar evaluates each tooth individually and preserves healthy teeth whenever it serves the overall treatment plan.
How long does the entire denture process take?
A conventional denture for a patient who is already edentulous takes approximately four to six weeks from the first impression to delivery — involving four to five appointments. If extractions are needed, healing time adds six to eight weeks before the definitive denture can be fabricated. Immediate dentures — placed the same day as extractions — require a reline three to six months later once the ridge has stabilized. Implant-supported options add three to six months for implant integration.
How much do dentures cost?
Conventional complete dentures range from $1,500 to $3,500 per arch depending on the materials and tooth quality selected. Implant-retained overdentures range from $5,000 to $12,000 per arch including the implants. Implant-supported fixed dentures (All-on-X) range from $20,000 to $35,000 per arch. Dr. Ostovar presents options at multiple price points and discusses which investment makes sense for your specific situation. CareCredit and Cherry financing are available.
Will I be without teeth at any point during the process?
We plan carefully to minimize any toothless period. Immediate dentures can be placed the same day as extractions, so you never leave the office without teeth. If a conventional denture is being made after healing, the fabrication process is timed so that your existing teeth or temporary denture bridges the gap. Dr. Ostovar discusses timing during the consultation and plans around your social and professional needs.
What is an immediate denture?
An immediate denture is fabricated before your teeth are extracted and placed in your mouth immediately after the extractions — at the same appointment. This means you are never without teeth. However, immediate dentures are considered transitional because the ridge changes shape significantly during healing. A hard reline or new denture is typically needed three to six months later once the bone has stabilized.
Am I too old for dental implants to support my denture?
Age alone is not a contraindication for dental implants. We have successfully placed implants for patients in their 70s, 80s, and beyond. The determining factors are bone quality, bone quantity, overall health, and any medications that might affect healing. A CBCT scan during the consultation reveals whether you have sufficient bone for implants or whether bone grafting would be needed first. Many patients who assumed they were too old are pleasantly surprised by their candidacy.
Does insurance cover dentures?
Most dental insurance plans cover dentures as a major prosthetic benefit, typically at 50 percent after deductible. Coverage usually applies once every five to eight years. Implants may or may not be covered depending on the specific plan — medical insurance sometimes covers implants when they are related to trauma, cancer reconstruction, or congenital conditions. Our insurance team verifies your coverage and maximizes your benefits before treatment begins.
Can you fix a denture that was made elsewhere?
In many cases, yes. We can reline, rebase, or adjust existing dentures to improve their fit and function. However, if the denture has fundamental design problems — wrong occlusion, incorrect vertical dimension, poor tooth position, or a warped base — modifications may not be enough. Dr. Ostovar evaluates the existing denture honestly and recommends whether repair, reline, or replacement is the most cost-effective path to a good result.
What should I bring to my denture consultation?
Bring your current denture (if you have one), any recent dental X-rays or records from other providers, your dental insurance card, and a list of medications you take. If you have old photographs showing your natural teeth and smile, bring those as well — they can be extremely helpful for Dr. Ostovar in designing tooth position and arrangement that looks natural and familiar to you.
Will I be able to eat normally with dentures?
Conventional upper dentures typically provide good chewing function because the palate provides a large surface area for suction. Lower dentures are more challenging — particularly for hard or sticky foods — because the tongue and floor of the mouth reduce the available surface area. Implant-retained dentures improve chewing efficiency by 60 to 200 percent compared to conventional lower dentures. Dr. Ostovar discusses realistic functional expectations during the consultation based on your specific anatomy.
Why should I see a prosthodontist for dentures instead of a general dentist?
Prosthodontists complete three additional years of residency training focused on designing and fabricating dental prostheses — including hundreds of denture cases during residency. This training covers advanced impression techniques, jaw relation recording, aesthetic tooth arrangement, and management of complex cases that general dental school does not adequately address. The difference is most apparent in difficult cases: severely resorbed ridges, unfavorable anatomy, patients with high expectations, or cases requiring integration of implants with the denture design.
Can I bring a family member to the consultation?
Absolutely, and we encourage it. Denture treatment involves significant decisions about cost, timeline, and treatment approach. Having a spouse, adult child, or trusted friend present helps ensure that all the information is understood and that the decision feels supported. Family members often notice functional or aesthetic concerns that the patient may not mention on their own.
