Cracked Fractured Tooth Evaluation
Cracked Fractured Tooth Evaluation is a specialized dental service provided by the board-certified specialists at Aloha Dental Specialty Center in Beaverton, OR. Acute Jaw Pain and Locked Jaw — Call (503) 822-0096 for Emergency Care Office hours: Monday through Friday 7 AM to 7 PM, Saturday and Sunday 8 AM to 2 PM.
When Your Jaw Locks or the Pain Becomes Unbearable, We Can Help Today
Acute jaw locking — the sudden inability to open or close your mouth — is frightening and painful. It can result from an anterior disc displacement without reduction in the temporomandibular joint, acute muscle spasm (trismus) from infection or trauma, a dislocated mandibular condyle, or inflammatory arthritis flare. Each cause requires a different intervention, and trying to force the jaw open or closed can worsen the problem. Call (503) 822-0096 and come to our office. Dr. Gvozden has the diagnostic capability and hands-on expertise to determine the cause and restore jaw function, often at the same visit.
When you arrive, we conduct a focused jaw examination: assessing range of motion, palpating the masticatory muscles and TMJ capsule, checking for joint sounds, and obtaining CBCT imaging to visualize the condyle position, joint space, and any bony pathology. For closed lock caused by anterior disc displacement, manual manipulation techniques can often reduce the disc back into position, restoring opening immediately. For trismus caused by infection (such as a spreading dental abscess), we address the source of infection while managing the muscle spasm. For condylar dislocation, manual reduction under sedation returns the jaw to its normal position.
Acute jaw emergencies are different from chronic TMJ disorders, though they are related. Our emergency treatment focuses on restoring function and eliminating pain today. If the episode indicates an underlying TMJ disorder, we will recommend comprehensive follow-up — including possible splint therapy, imaging, or joint procedures — to prevent recurrence. We are open seven days a week with extended hours to accommodate these urgent situations.

Understanding Your Investment
At Aloha Dental Specialty Center, we provide transparent pricing before any treatment begins. The cost of your procedure depends on clinical complexity, materials used, and sedation requirements. We walk you through every line item during your consultation so there are no surprises.
What Affects Cost:
- Clinical Complexity: Bone loss, sinus proximity, nerve involvement, or the need for grafting affects treatment planning and surgical time.
- Materials: We use research-backed implant systems, purified bone graft matrices, and high-strength ceramics from established manufacturers.
- Sedation: Options range from local anesthesia to IV sedation, each with different associated costs. We discuss the best option for your comfort and procedure.

Recovery & Healing Timeline
Understanding the healing process helps you plan ahead and follow post-operative instructions for the best possible outcome.
First 48 Hours
Mild swelling and tenderness are normal. Apply ice packs in 20-minute intervals and take prescribed or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. Eat soft foods and avoid the surgical site when chewing.
Days 3 to 7
Swelling peaks around day three and then improves. The tissue begins closing over the surgical site. Continue with soft foods and use any prescribed antimicrobial rinse. Most patients return to normal activities during this phase.
Long-Term Healing
Surface tissue heals within two to three weeks. Bone integration and deep healing continue for three to six months. Avoid smoking, follow up as scheduled, and maintain good oral hygiene throughout recovery.
Questions during recovery? Call us at (503) 822-0096. We are available for post-operative concerns.
Acute TMJ Lock: Pathophysiology and Intervention
Acute closed lock of the TMJ occurs when the articular disc displaces anteriorly and cannot recapture during jaw opening. Research in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery demonstrates that manual manipulation achieves successful disc reduction in 72% of acute cases when performed within the first two weeks of onset. After six weeks of locked jaw, the success rate of conservative reduction drops below 30%, and arthrocentesis or arthroscopy may be needed. A study in the Journal of Craniomandibular Practice found that trismus secondary to odontogenic infection resolves predictably once the source infection is drained, with mean recovery of full opening within seven days.
Why Choose a Specialist?
Dr. Jovan Gvozden trained in TMJ surgery during his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency, including manual joint manipulation, arthrocentesis, and open joint procedures. He manages acute jaw locking emergencies from both traumatic and TMJ-related causes. CBCT 3D imaging at our office provides immediate visualization of condylar position, fracture, and joint space pathology.

A Note from Your Dental Team
In my experience, the patients who get the best results from cracked fractured tooth evaluation are those who come in with realistic expectations and follow their post-treatment instructions carefully. I’d rather spend extra time explaining what to expect than have a patient be surprised later.
“Every patient I see has a different story, a different set of concerns, and a different definition of what ‘success’ looks like. That’s why I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment plans. When you come in for a consultation, I’ll listen first, examine second, and recommend third.
I also won’t recommend a procedure you don’t need. If your tooth can be saved with a filling instead of a crown, I’ll tell you that. If watchful waiting is appropriate, I’ll explain why. My job isn’t to sell treatment — it’s to give you my honest clinical judgment so you can make an informed decision.
If you have questions about whether this treatment is right for you, or if you’ve been told you need this procedure by another dentist and want a second opinion, call us at (503) 822-0096. We’re happy to take the time to explain everything — no rush, no pressure.”

I know many patients feel anxious about dental procedures — you’re not alone in that. What I hear most often after treatment is: “That was so much easier than I expected.” We’re here to make this as comfortable as possible for you.
Who is a good candidate? Most patients in good general health qualify for cracked fractured tooth evaluation. We evaluate your specific situation — including medical history, current medications, and dental condition — during a thorough consultation with CBCT 3D imaging. Factors like uncontrolled diabetes, certain medications, or active infections may require management before proceeding.

Frequently Asked Questions
My jaw is stuck and I cannot open my mouth — what do I do?
Do not force it. Apply moist heat to both sides of the jaw and call (503) 822-0096 immediately. We will see you the same day. Forcing a locked jaw can damage the disc further or fracture the condyle if there is an underlying pathology.
What causes a jaw to lock?
The most common causes are anterior disc displacement in the TMJ, muscle spasm (trismus) from infection or overuse, condylar dislocation, and inflammatory arthritis. Each cause has a different treatment, which is why professional diagnosis is essential.
Can you unlock my jaw at the office visit?
In many cases, yes. Manual manipulation for disc displacement, muscle relaxation techniques for trismus, and manual reduction for dislocation can all restore function at the emergency visit. Some cases require IV sedation for effective manipulation.
Is a locked jaw dangerous?
A locked jaw from disc displacement is painful but not life-threatening. However, trismus caused by a spreading dental infection can indicate a serious fascial space infection that could compromise the airway. This is why we evaluate the cause urgently.
What is trismus?
Trismus is restricted jaw opening caused by spasm of the masticatory muscles. It can result from dental infection, trauma, post-surgical inflammation, or radiation therapy. Treatment targets the underlying cause while managing the muscle spasm with medications and physical therapy.
Will I need surgery for a locked jaw?
Most acute jaw locking episodes are managed non-surgically with manual manipulation, medication, and physical therapy. If conservative measures fail after four to six weeks, minimally invasive arthrocentesis — a joint lavage performed under sedation — is the next step.
Can stress cause my jaw to lock?
Stress does not directly lock the jaw, but chronic stress-related clenching fatigues the masticatory muscles and increases the load on the TMJ disc, making disc displacement more likely. Stress management is part of long-term TMJ disorder prevention.
What is the difference between a locked jaw and TMJ disorder?
A locked jaw is an acute event — your jaw is stuck right now. TMJ disorder is a chronic condition involving ongoing pain, clicking, limited opening, or muscle dysfunction. A locked jaw episode can be the acute presentation of an underlying TMJ disorder.
Should I go to the ER for a locked jaw?
Emergency rooms can prescribe muscle relaxants but rarely have the expertise or imaging to diagnose and treat the cause. Come to Aloha Dental Specialty Center — we have CBCT imaging, TMJ expertise, and the ability to perform manual manipulation and arthrocentesis. Call (503) 822-0096.
How long does jaw locking last if untreated?
Without treatment, acute closed lock may persist indefinitely. The disc can become permanently displaced, and adhesions may develop in the joint space. Early treatment within the first two weeks has significantly better outcomes than delayed intervention.
Can a dislocated jaw be fixed without surgery?
Yes. Most jaw dislocations are reduced manually — Dr. Gvozden applies downward and backward pressure on the posterior molars to guide the condyle back into the fossa. This is performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation and takes just minutes.
What medications help with acute jaw locking?
Muscle relaxants such as cyclobenzaprine, anti-inflammatory medications, and sometimes a short course of oral corticosteroids can reduce muscle spasm and joint inflammation. These are adjuncts to manual treatment, not replacements for it.
Is jaw locking more common in women?
Yes. TMJ disc displacement and associated locking occur approximately three to four times more frequently in women than men, with peak incidence in the 20-to-40 age group. Hormonal factors, joint hypermobility, and anatomic differences all contribute.
Can jaw locking happen again after treatment?
It can, especially if an underlying TMJ disorder is not addressed. After resolving the acute episode, we recommend a comprehensive TMJ evaluation including splint therapy if indicated, to reduce the risk of recurrence.
How much does emergency jaw treatment cost?
The emergency evaluation with CBCT imaging typically ranges from $200 to $400. Manual manipulation is included in the visit fee. If arthrocentesis is needed, it is an additional procedure. We discuss costs before proceeding with treatment.
