Orthodontic Emergency Care in Beaverton, OR

Orthodontic Emergencies Are Painful and Disruptive — We Fix Them Fast

A broken bracket, a poking archwire, a loose band, or a displaced spring can turn a routine week of orthodontic treatment into an emergency. A protruding wire stabbing the inside of your cheek or a detached appliance irritating your tongue makes it difficult to eat, speak, or focus on anything else. While these situations are rarely life-threatening, they are genuinely painful and should be addressed promptly before they cause tissue damage or set back your orthodontic progress. Call (503) 822-0096 — we accommodate orthodontic emergencies the same day.

At Aloha Dental Specialty Center, we handle orthodontic emergencies whether or not we placed the original appliance. Broken brackets can be rebonded. Poking wires can be trimmed, tucked, or covered with protective wax. Loose bands can be recemented. Displaced springs and elastics can be repositioned. If you are traveling, away from your regular orthodontist, or simply need the problem fixed today rather than waiting for an appointment next week, we can help.

For more complex orthodontic emergencies — a traumatic injury to teeth with braces, an impacted tooth with an attached orthodontic bracket and chain, or a surgical case where the orthodontic appliance has been compromised — our multi-specialty team provides the surgical and restorative expertise that a standalone orthodontic office may not have on-site.

Understanding Your Investment

At Aloha Dental Specialty Center, we provide transparent pricing before any treatment begins. The cost of your procedure depends on clinical complexity, materials used, and sedation requirements. We walk you through every line item during your consultation so there are no surprises.

What Affects Cost:

  • Clinical Complexity: Bone loss, sinus proximity, nerve involvement, or the need for grafting affects treatment planning and surgical time.
  • Materials: We use research-backed implant systems, purified bone graft matrices, and high-strength ceramics from established manufacturers.
  • Sedation: Options range from local anesthesia to IV sedation, each with different associated costs. We discuss the best option for your comfort and procedure.

Insurance & Financing

We accept most major dental insurance plans and file claims on your behalf. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment and submits pre-treatment estimates with clinical documentation to maximize coverage.

For out-of-pocket costs, we partner with CareCredit and Cherry for flexible payment plans. We also offer our ADSC Dental Savings Plan for patients without insurance.

The post-op complication visit dental procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes per session. If multiple visits are needed, we’ll space them 2-4 weeks apart. Most patients return to normal activities within 1-3 days.

Recovery & Healing Timeline

Understanding the healing process helps you plan ahead and follow post-operative instructions for the best possible outcome.

First 48 Hours

Mild swelling and tenderness are normal. Apply ice packs in 20-minute intervals and take prescribed or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. Eat soft foods and avoid the surgical site when chewing.

Days 3 to 7

Swelling peaks around day three and then improves. The tissue begins closing over the surgical site. Continue with soft foods and use any prescribed antimicrobial rinse. Most patients return to normal activities during this phase.

Long-Term Healing

Surface tissue heals within two to three weeks. Bone integration and deep healing continue for three to six months. Avoid smoking, follow up as scheduled, and maintain good oral hygiene throughout recovery.

Questions during recovery? Call us at (503) 822-0096. We are available for post-operative concerns.

The Science

Managing Orthodontic Appliance Failures: Clinical Protocols

Research in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics reports that bracket failure rates range from 5 to 15 percent per treatment course, with the highest incidence on lower premolars and upper lateral incisors. Studies show that prompt rebonding within one week of bracket failure prevents significant tooth relapse, while delays exceeding three weeks can add months to overall treatment time. A systematic review in the European Journal of Orthodontics found that mucous membrane ulceration from protruding archwires heals within five to seven days once the wire is trimmed, but can progress to secondary infection if the irritation source is not removed.

Beyond simple bracket and wire issues, our multi-specialty capability means we can manage trauma to teeth in braces, evaluate suspected root resorption with CBCT imaging, and handle surgical complications related to orthodontic treatment.

Treatment time varies by complexity. A straightforward procedure may take 30-60 minutes, while more involved cases can take 1-2 hours. Your consultation visit typically lasts 45-60 minutes including imaging and treatment planning. We’ll give you a specific time estimate for your individual case.

A Note from Your Dental Team

In my experience, the patients who get the best results from post-op complication visit dental are those who come in with realistic expectations and follow their post-treatment instructions carefully. I’d rather spend extra time explaining what to expect than have a patient be surprised later.

“Every patient I see has a different story, a different set of concerns, and a different definition of what ‘success’ looks like. That’s why I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment plans. When you come in for a consultation, I’ll listen first, examine second, and recommend third.

I also won’t recommend a procedure you don’t need. If your tooth can be saved with a filling instead of a crown, I’ll tell you that. If watchful waiting is appropriate, I’ll explain why. My job isn’t to sell treatment — it’s to give you my honest clinical judgment so you can make an informed decision.

If you have questions about whether this treatment is right for you, or if you’ve been told you need this procedure by another dentist and want a second opinion, call us at (503) 822-0096. We’re happy to take the time to explain everything — no rush, no pressure.”

— Dr. Merat Ostovar & Dr. Jovan Gvozden | Aloha Dental Specialty Center, Beaverton, OR

I know many patients feel anxious about dental procedures — you’re not alone in that. What I hear most often after treatment is: “That was so much easier than I expected.” We’re here to make this as comfortable as possible for you.

Are You a Candidate for Post-op Complication Visit Dental?

Most patients in good general health are candidates for post-op complication visit dental. However, certain factors may affect your eligibility or require modifications to the treatment plan:

  • Medical conditions: Uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune disorders, or blood-thinning medications may require coordination with your physician before treatment.
  • Bone quality: For post-op complication visit dental involving the jawbone, adequate bone density is essential. A CBCT 3D scan during your consultation determines this precisely.
  • Smoking: Tobacco use significantly impairs healing. We strongly recommend quitting 2-4 weeks before and after any surgical procedure.
  • Age: There is generally no upper age limit. What matters is your overall health, not your age. We have successfully treated patients in their 80s and 90s.

The only way to know for certain is a consultation with our board-certified specialists. Call (503) 822-0096 to schedule your evaluation — we’ll tell you honestly whether this is the right treatment for your situation.

Typical Healing Timeline:

Days 1-3: Initial healing, mild swelling managed with ice and medication. Days 4-7: Swelling subsides, gradual return to normal diet. Weeks 2-4: Soft tissue heals completely. Months 2-6: Bone remodeling and full integration (for surgical procedures). Individual recovery varies — we provide detailed post-op instructions specific to your procedure.

How long does it take? The procedure usually requires 30-60 minutes. Complex cases may take up to 2 hours. Your initial consultation is approximately 60 minutes including CBCT 3D imaging and treatment planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

A wire is poking the inside of my cheek — what can I do right now?

Cover the end of the wire with orthodontic wax or a small piece of sugarless gum as a temporary measure. If you have nail clippers sterilized with rubbing alcohol, you can carefully trim the wire as close to the last bracket as possible. Then call (503) 822-0096 for a same-day appointment.

My bracket came off — is that an emergency?

It is not life-threatening, but it should be addressed within a few days to prevent tooth movement reversal. If the bracket is sliding on the wire and causing irritation, cover it with wax and call us for a prompt appointment.

Can you fix my braces even though they were placed at another office?

Yes. We can rebond brackets, trim wires, recement bands, and address appliance-related pain regardless of where your orthodontic treatment is being managed. We will provide a summary of what was done so you can inform your regular orthodontist.

I got hit in the mouth and I have braces — what should I do?

If teeth are displaced or knocked out, this is a dental trauma emergency — call (503) 822-0096 immediately. Lacerations from brackets and wires embedding in lip tissue are common with facial trauma during braces and may need suturing.

My retainer cracked — can you fix it?

Depending on the type of retainer, repair may be possible. Clear retainers (Essix-type) that crack usually need replacement. Hawley retainers with acrylic bases can often be repaired. Bring the pieces to our office for evaluation.

How much does an orthodontic emergency visit cost?

Wire trimming and bracket coverage with wax are typically $50 to $100. Bracket rebonding ranges from $75 to $200. Band recementation is $100 to $150. We provide clear pricing before any work is done.

Can orthodontic wax be swallowed safely?

Yes. Orthodontic wax is non-toxic and passes harmlessly through the digestive system if accidentally swallowed. It is safe to use liberally on any part of the appliance that is causing irritation.

A spring on my braces came loose — is that serious?

A displaced spring can cause irritation and interrupt the intended tooth movement. Do not try to reposition it yourself — you may accidentally swallow it or damage adjacent teeth. Call us for a same-day visit to have it properly repositioned or replaced.

My Invisalign tray cracked — what should I do?

If you have the next tray in your sequence, you can advance to it. If not, wear the cracked tray to prevent teeth from shifting and contact your orthodontist for a replacement. If you need immediate evaluation, call (503) 822-0096.

Can I eat normally with a broken bracket?

Eat soft foods and avoid chewing directly on the side with the broken bracket. The bracket may slide along the wire and scrape your cheek. Cover it with wax and schedule a repair appointment as soon as possible.

What if my child swallows a bracket?

A swallowed bracket will pass through the digestive system without harm in the vast majority of cases. If your child has any difficulty breathing (which would suggest the bracket was aspirated rather than swallowed), seek immediate emergency medical attention.

How do I apply orthodontic wax?

Dry the bracket or wire area with a tissue. Roll a small piece of wax into a ball, flatten it slightly, and press it firmly over the offending bracket or wire end. It should stick in place and create a smooth buffer against your cheek or lip.

My rubber bands broke — do I need an emergency visit?

Broken elastic bands are not an emergency, but you should replace them with spares from your orthodontist as soon as possible. If you have run out, call your orthodontist for replacements. Lack of elastic wear for more than a few days can slow treatment progress.

Can a broken appliance extend my total treatment time?

Yes. Unaddressed bracket failures and wire issues can allow teeth to shift backward, potentially adding weeks to months to your treatment. Prompt repair minimizes the impact on your overall treatment timeline.

Do you see orthodontic emergencies on weekends?

Yes. Our office is open Saturday and Sunday 8 AM to 2 PM. Call (503) 822-0096 to schedule a weekend orthodontic emergency appointment. Wire poking and bracket irritation should not ruin your weekend.
