Second Opinion Consultation
Second Opinion Dental Consultation is a specialized dental service provided by the board-certified specialists at Aloha Dental Specialty Center in Beaverton, OR. An independent specialist assessment when you want clarity before committing to treatment.
Why Getting a Second Opinion Is Not Rude — It Is Smart
If you have been presented with a treatment plan that feels overwhelming, expensive, or uncertain, you are not being difficult by seeking a second opinion — you are being responsible. A second opinion consultation at Aloha Dental Specialty Center gives you an independent assessment from a specialist who has no stake in the original treatment plan. Dr. Ostovar or Dr. Gvozden will review your existing records, examine you clinically, take any additional imaging that is needed, and give you their honest assessment: whether the proposed treatment is appropriate, whether alternatives exist, or whether a different approach would produce a better outcome.
Patients most commonly seek second opinions for implant treatment plans involving multiple implants or full-arch reconstruction, extraction recommendations when the patient wants to explore saving the tooth, root canal treatment versus extraction decisions, treatment plans that seem unusually aggressive or unusually expensive, and surgical procedures where the risks feel unclear. These are exactly the situations where specialist-level diagnostic capability makes the biggest difference — a CBCT scan that was not taken at the first office may change the treatment plan entirely.
We approach every second opinion objectively. If the original treatment plan is solid, we will tell you so — and explain why we agree with it. If we see a better option, we will lay it out with the clinical reasoning behind it. If the case is outside our scope, we will say that too. You will leave with a clear understanding of your options, not a sales pitch. Bring your existing X-rays, treatment plan documents, and any questions you have. Call (503) 822-0096 to schedule. Office hours: Monday through Friday 7 AM to 7 PM, Saturday and Sunday 8 AM to 2 PM.

Understanding Your Investment
At Aloha Dental Specialty Center, we provide transparent pricing before any treatment begins. The cost of your procedure depends on clinical complexity, materials used, and sedation requirements. We walk you through every line item during your consultation so there are no surprises.
What Affects Cost:
- Clinical Complexity: Bone loss, sinus proximity, nerve involvement, or the need for grafting affects treatment planning and surgical time.
- Materials: We use research-backed implant systems, purified bone graft matrices, and high-strength ceramics from established manufacturers.
- Sedation: Options range from local anesthesia to IV sedation, each with different associated costs. We discuss the best option for your comfort and procedure.
Insurance & Financing
We accept most major dental insurance plans and file claims on your behalf. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment and submits pre-treatment estimates with clinical documentation to maximize coverage.
For out-of-pocket costs, we partner with CareCredit and Cherry for flexible payment plans. We also offer our ADSC Dental Savings Plan for patients without insurance.
Recovery & Healing Timeline
Understanding the healing process helps you plan ahead and follow post-operative instructions for the best possible outcome.
First 48 Hours
Mild swelling and tenderness are normal. Apply ice packs in 20-minute intervals and take prescribed or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. Eat soft foods and avoid the surgical site when chewing.
Days 3 to 7
Swelling peaks around day three and then improves. The tissue begins closing over the surgical site. Continue with soft foods and use any prescribed antimicrobial rinse. Most patients return to normal activities during this phase.
Long-Term Healing
Surface tissue heals within two to three weeks. Bone integration and deep healing continue for three to six months. Avoid smoking, follow up as scheduled, and maintain good oral hygiene throughout recovery.

The Value of Independent Diagnostic Review
Studies in the medical literature consistently demonstrate that second opinions change the diagnosis or treatment plan in 10 to 60 percent of cases, depending on the specialty and complexity. In dentistry, a retrospective analysis published in the Journal of the American Dental Association found that second opinions resulted in treatment plan modifications in approximately 30 percent of cases, with the most common changes involving a shift from extraction to conservation, identification of additional pathology not detected on initial imaging, and reclassification of treatment urgency. The addition of CBCT imaging at the second-opinion visit — when it was not performed initially — was a significant factor in diagnostic changes, particularly for implant planning and endodontic evaluation.
Why Choose a Specialist?
Second opinion consultations at ADSC are conducted by experienced specialists who regularly manage the conditions being reassessed. Dr. Ostovar has evaluated thousands of implant cases over his fifteen-year career, including many where the original treatment plan was modified after three-dimensional imaging revealed bone volume or anatomical constraints that were not apparent on two-dimensional films. Dr. Gvozden brings endodontic and restorative expertise to cases where root canal retreatment, apicoectomy, or alternative restorative approaches may provide a better long-term outcome than the originally proposed plan.

A Note from Your Dental Team
In my experience, the patients who get the best results from second opinion dental consultation are those who come in with realistic expectations and follow their post-treatment instructions carefully. I’d rather spend extra time explaining what to expect than have a patient be surprised later.
“Every patient I see has a different story, a different set of concerns, and a different definition of what ‘success’ looks like. That’s why I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment plans. When you come in for a consultation, I’ll listen first, examine second, and recommend third.
I also won’t recommend a procedure you don’t need. If your tooth can be saved with a filling instead of a crown, I’ll tell you that. If watchful waiting is appropriate, I’ll explain why. My job isn’t to sell treatment — it’s to give you my honest clinical judgment so you can make an informed decision.
If you have questions about whether this treatment is right for you, or if you’ve been told you need this procedure by another dentist and want a second opinion, call us at (503) 822-0096. We’re happy to take the time to explain everything — no rush, no pressure.”
— Dr. Merat Ostovar & Dr. Jovan Gvozden | Aloha Dental Specialty Center, Beaverton, OR
I know many patients feel anxious about dental procedures — you’re not alone in that. What I hear most often after treatment is: “That was so much easier than I expected.” We’re here to make this as comfortable as possible for you.
Are You a Candidate for Second Opinion Dental Consultation?
Most patients in good general health are candidates for second opinion dental consultation. However, certain factors may affect your eligibility or require modifications to the treatment plan:
- Medical conditions: Uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune disorders, or blood-thinning medications may require coordination with your physician before treatment.
- Bone quality: For second opinion dental consultation involving the jawbone, adequate bone density is essential. A CBCT 3D scan during your consultation determines this precisely.
- Smoking: Tobacco use significantly impairs healing. We strongly recommend quitting 2-4 weeks before and after any surgical procedure.
- Age: There is generally no upper age limit. What matters is your overall health, not your age. We have successfully treated patients in their 80s and 90s.
The only way to know for certain is a consultation with our board-certified specialists. Call (503) 822-0096 to schedule your evaluation — we’ll tell you honestly whether this is the right treatment for your situation.
Typical Healing Timeline:
Days 1-3: Initial healing, mild swelling managed with ice and medication. Days 4-7: Swelling subsides, gradual return to normal diet. Weeks 2-4: Soft tissue heals completely. Months 2-6: Bone remodeling and full integration (for surgical procedures). Individual recovery varies — we provide detailed post-op instructions specific to your procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it appropriate to get a second opinion on dental treatment?
Absolutely. Any reputable dentist will understand and respect your decision to seek a second opinion, especially for complex or costly treatment plans. It is no different from getting a second opinion before surgery in medicine. It protects you and often provides valuable additional perspective.
What documents should I bring to a second opinion at ADSC?
Bring your current treatment plan with itemized procedures and costs, any available X-rays or CBCT scans (digital copies are ideal), a list of medications and medical conditions, and your dental insurance card. If your previous dentist sent records, we will also review those. The more information we have, the more thorough our assessment.
Will you take new X-rays or a CBCT scan?
Only if the existing imaging is insufficient for a thorough evaluation. If the original office did not take a CBCT scan and the clinical situation warrants one, we will recommend it — three-dimensional data frequently changes the assessment. If your existing imaging is adequate, we will use it.
How much does a second opinion consultation cost?
A second opinion visit is comparable in cost to a standard new patient consultation. The fee covers the clinical examination, review of existing records, any additional imaging, and the doctor discussing the findings and alternative options with you. Insurance may cover the evaluation under diagnostic benefits.
Will you contact my original dentist?
Only with your explicit permission. Many patients prefer to receive the second opinion privately and then decide how to proceed. If you want us to communicate with the original provider, we are happy to do so.
What if you agree with the original treatment plan?
We will tell you directly. If the original plan is clinically sound, confirming that gives you confidence to proceed. We will explain why we agree and address any specific concerns you had about the proposed treatment.
Can I switch my treatment to your office if I prefer your plan?
Yes. If you prefer the treatment approach recommended by ADSC, you can transfer your care to our office. We handle communication with your previous provider and coordinate any records transfer.
I was told I need a tooth extracted but I want to save it. Can you help?
This is one of the most common second opinion requests we receive. A thorough evaluation with CBCT imaging frequently reveals treatment options that were not considered — root canal retreatment, apicoectomy, crown lengthening, or alternative surgical approaches. Sometimes extraction is genuinely the best option, but we can determine that objectively.
How often do you disagree with the original treatment plan?
In our experience, we modify or suggest alternatives to the proposed treatment plan in roughly one out of three cases. The changes range from minor adjustments in sequencing to entirely different approaches. The remaining cases confirm that the original plan was appropriate.
Can I get a second opinion on a treatment plan from another specialist?
Yes. We regularly evaluate treatment plans proposed by other specialists, including oral surgeons, periodontists, and prosthodontists. Two specialists can look at the same case and recommend different approaches, and understanding both perspectives helps you make the best decision for your situation.
I was quoted a very high fee for my treatment. Can you tell me if the price is reasonable?
We can provide an independent cost estimate for the same treatment at our office, which gives you a comparison point. Fees vary between offices based on overhead, materials, and geographic area, but significant discrepancies sometimes indicate differences in the treatment plan itself rather than just pricing.
How long does a second opinion appointment take?
Typically 45 to 60 minutes. This includes reviewing your records, performing any additional examination or imaging, and a thorough discussion of findings and alternative options. Complex cases involving multiple teeth or full-arch reconstruction may require additional time.
Will getting a second opinion delay my treatment?
A second opinion visit can usually be scheduled within one to two weeks. Unless your condition is a true emergency — active infection, uncontrolled pain, or trauma — a short delay to confirm the diagnosis and treatment plan is unlikely to affect outcomes and may prevent unnecessary or subbest treatment.
My dentist recommended removing all my teeth for implant dentures. Is that always necessary?
Not always. Full-arch extraction and implant reconstruction is an excellent solution for the right patient, but some patients have teeth that can be saved with endodontic treatment, periodontal therapy, or restorative care. A CBCT scan and tooth-by-tooth assessment will determine which teeth are truly hopeless and which are salvageable.
Do you provide second opinions for pediatric dental cases?
Yes. Parents frequently seek second opinions for recommended extractions, pulp therapy, or orthodontic interventions in children. We evaluate pediatric cases with age-appropriate imaging and provide clear explanations to parents about the options and their relative merits.
