One of the most common misconceptions in dentistry is that bone loss automatically disqualifies you from getting dental implants. While adequate bone is important, modern techniques make implant treatment possible for the vast majority of patients with bone loss.
How Bone Loss Affects Implant Placement
Dental implants need a certain amount of bone width, height, and density to fuse properly. When bone has resorbed due to missing teeth, gum disease, or other factors, the available bone may be insufficient for standard implant placement.
However, this doesn’t mean implants are impossible — it means additional steps or alternative approaches may be needed.
Solutions for Patients With Bone Loss
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting rebuilds jawbone using bone graft material. After 3-6 months of healing, the grafted area is strong enough to support implants. This is the most common solution for localized bone loss.
Sinus Lift
For upper jaw (maxillary) bone loss in the molar area, a sinus lift creates space by gently lifting the sinus membrane and adding bone graft material beneath it.
All-on-4 Technique
The All-on-4 technique uses angled posterior implants to maximize available bone — often avoiding the need for bone grafting entirely. This makes it ideal for patients with moderate to severe bone loss.
Short Implants
Modern short implants (6-8mm instead of the traditional 10-13mm) can be effective in areas with limited bone height, reducing or eliminating the need for grafting.
